Otoplasty

Otoplasty, also known as ear pinning or ear reshaping surgery, is a cosmetic procedure that corrects the shape, size, or position of the ears. It is most commonly performed to reduce the appearance of protruding ears and create a more natural, symmetrical look. This surgery is suitable for both children (typically after age 5) and adults who are self-conscious about their ears.

How is otoplasty performed?

Otoplasty is usually performed under local anesthesia with sedation for adults, or general anesthesia for children. The procedure takes about 1 to 2 hours. An incision is typically made behind the ear, allowing the surgeon to access and reshape the cartilage.

The ear is then repositioned closer to the head and secured with internal sutures to maintain its new shape. The incisions are closed with fine stitches, and a dressing or headband is applied to protect the area and support healing.

Post Otoplasty Care

Recovery from otoplasty is generally smooth, and most patients return to regular activities within a week. Mild swelling, bruising, or discomfort around the ears is normal during the first few days.

Wear the recommended headband as directed – This helps support the new ear position and protects the ears while sleeping.

Avoid sleeping on your side – This prevents pressure on the healing ears.

Keep the incision site clean and dry – Follow your surgeon’s care instructions to avoid infection and ensure proper healing.
